Jordan | Holiday Inn Resort Dead Sea

Kail and I took advantage of the recent U.S. federal holiday in observance of Columbus Day to make our first visit to the Dead Sea. Since our work week is Sunday through Thursday, federal holidays normally observed on Mondays in the United States are observed on Sundays here, so we had a three-day weekend.

Home Leave | First Landing State Park

Inspired by our hike and excellent wildlife sightings at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, my sister, Kail and I embarked on our second of three hikes during our stay in Virginia Beach — this time to First Landing State Park. While this more urban park doesn’t have quite as large a variety ofContinue reading “Home Leave | First Landing State Park”

Home Leave | Wright Brothers National Memorial

Wright Brothers National Memorial. While visiting my sister during home leave in Virginia Beach, we took a day trip to the Outer Banks, North Carolina, which is about an hour and a half away. The Outer Banks — or OBX as it’s come to be known — holds a special place in my heart as theContinue reading “Home Leave | Wright Brothers National Memorial”

Home Leave | Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

Kail and I spent part of home leave visiting my sister in Virginia Beach, where, previously unbeknownst to us, there are several hiking trails at state parks and national wildlife refuges within an hour’s drive or so. We went on a couple hikes during our one-week stay, the first of which was at the Great Dismal Swamp NationalContinue reading “Home Leave | Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge”

Jordan | Mount Nebo & Madaba

A week and some change after arriving to Jordan, Kail and I took our first trip outside Amman. We went on an Embassy-organized trip to Mount Nebo and Madaba to see the famous view of the Promised Land as granted to Moses by God in the Bible, as well as Madaba’s beautiful mosaics.

Three Days in London

After leaving Afghanistan, we planned a “rest stop” in London on the way home — sort of a sixth R&R/RRB, if you will. It was a short trip — just three days — but a nice way to ease out of Kabul and back to “the real world.” Neither Kail nor I wanted to leave KabulContinue reading “Three Days in London”

Singapore | Singapore Flyer

In Singapore, the second place we hopped off our bus tour was the Singapore Flyer, “Asia’s largest giant observation wheel” at 165 meters tall. I confess it was my first observation wheel experience. I’ve ridden my share of ferris wheels but this was much larger and slower and the cars were glass-enclosed and air-conditioned.
